|A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) will begin examining all aspects of the Illinois State Police’s (ISP) policy and procedures, management, operations, and support services beginning April 18. The examination is part of the Commission’s re-accreditation process. |
“Verification that the ISP meets the Commission’s state-of-the-art standards is part of a voluntary process to retain accreditation status -- a highly prized recognition of law enforcement professional excellence,” said ISP Acting Director Jonathon E. Monken.
As part of the assessment, agency employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments by calling the assessment team at 1-877-318-9971, Sunday, April 18, 2010, between the hours of 3 and 5 p.m. Comments are limited to 10 minutes and must address the Agency’s ability to comply with CALEA standards. A copy of the standards is available by contacting Lieutenant Al Manint, Accreditation Manager, at 217-524-5886, or at the ISP Accreditation Office, 801 South 7th, Suite 500A, Springfield, Illinois. Persons wishing to offer written comments about the Illinois State Police’s ability to meet the standards for accreditation are requested to write the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc., 10302 Eaton Place, Suite 100, Fairfax, Virginia, 22030-2215. According to Monken, the ISP has to comply with 360 CALEA standards in order to maintain accredited status. “Ensuring the Illinois State Police meets internationally accepted standards for the operations of police agencies, ensures the citizens of Illinois the Department exceeds the high standards of performance demanded by modern society.”
ISP Accreditation Program Manager Lieutenant Al Manint said the assessment team is composed of experienced law enforcement practitioners from out-of-state agencies who will review written materials, interview individuals, ride with Troopers, visit district headquarters, communications facilities, and records centers, the ISP Academy, and other offices and facilities. Chief Scott Cunningham from the Winston-Salem Police department, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, will serve as the team leader and will be assisted by Lieutenant Virgil Hubbard from the Knoxville Police Department, Knoxville, Tennessee. Chief Cunningham and Lieutenant Hubbard have extensive experience in the accreditation process for law enforcement agencies through CALEA. Once the Commission’s assessors complete their review of the Agency they report back to the full Commission, which will then decide if the ISP is to be re-accredited.
Re-accreditation will be for a three-year period during which the Department must submit annual reports attesting continued compliance with those standards under which it was re-accredited. The Illinois State Police was the first state police agency accredited by CALEA in 1986. Additionally, ISP forensic laboratories received the first accreditation issued by the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors in 1984. Both accreditations have been maintained since their initial accreditation.
