SPRINGFIELD, IL – Provisional traffic fatality figures released today by the Illinois State Police (ISP) show that 20 persons lost their lives as a result of 17 fatal crashes on Illinois roadways during the Memorial Day weekend. This total compares to 17 fatalities and 16 crashes over the 2001 weekend.
Nearly 16,900 citations and written warnings were issued by ISP officers during the four-day period. Additionally, Troopers made 120 DUI arrests and provided assistance to more than 1,700 motorists.
In an effort to increase seat belt use and reduce crashes, the Illinois State Police participated in All America Buckle-Up Week, the Combined Accident Reduction Effort, and the Click It or Ticket Enforcement Blitz, which continues through June 2.
Preliminary statistics reported to the ISP indicate traffic deaths occurred in the following counties: Bond (1), Cook (11), DeKalb (1) Iroquois (2), Lake (1), LaSalle (1), Monroe (1), St. Clair (1), and Winnebago (1). |
