SPRINGFIELD, IL -- Illinois State Police Acting Director Gene P. Marlin announced today that 10 persons were killed in 10 fatal crashes on Illinois highways over the four-day New Year’s holiday weekend. Last year’s five-day reporting period resulted in 11 fatalities.
Marlin said this year’s victims ranged in age from 18 to 93, including eight males and two females. There were four fatal crashes on Thursday, four on Friday, one on Saturday, and one on Sunday. Five of them occurred during daylight hours and five occurred during nighttime hours.
"Now that traffic is moving again following the weekend winter storm, it’s imperative that motorists slow down, drive defensively, and buckle-up." said Marlin. "And it’s critical during this cold snap that drivers be prepared for possible car problems. Take extra coats and blankets, a cell phone, and make sure friends and loved ones know your travel plans and schedule. Simple preparations can save lives," he concluded. |
