Illinois State Police Seize 55 Pounds of Cannabis During Routine Traffic Stop

ISP Seal
Press Release Date: May 23, 2014

District 22 Trooper’s Suspicions Lead to Suitcase Full of Drugs

Ullin, IL - Illinois State Police (ISP) officials this week announced the seizure of more than 50 pounds of cannabis during a routine traffic stop.  The large load of marijuana was discovered during a traffic stop that was initiated as a result of a speeding violation.

On Monday, May 19, 2014, at approximately 7:22 a.m., an ISP District 22 trooper observed a maroon 2014 Chrysler Town and Country minivan speeding northbound on I-57 near milepost 7 in Pulaski County.  The trooper conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle and during the investigation of the stop, spoke with its two occupants, a male and female, regarding the details of their trip. The stories were not consistent which alerted the trooper to possible criminal activity.  A subsequent consensual search of the vehicle yielded a large black suitcase in the back of the vehicle.  Inside the suitcase was a large shrink-wrapped package which was later determined to contain approximately 55 pounds of suspected cannabis.

Following the discovery of the cannabis, agents from ISP Zone 7 responded and assisted in the investigation.  The driver, Pedro Javier Cuevas, 28, of McKinney, Texas, was subsequently charged with Cannabis Trafficking and detained at the Tri-County Detention Center.  The second occupant of the vehicle was initially charged in the matter, but charges were dropped and she has since been released.

“This arrest demonstrates the ISP’s continued commitment to its criminal interdiction efforts,” said District 22 Lieutenant Brad Lacey.  “Seizures of this magnitude significantly cut into the pipeline that is bringing large quantities of dangerous drugs to Chicago and other drop points within the Midwest,” added Lacey.
