Law Enforcement Officials Urge Motorcycle Riders to Ride Safely & Use Precaution COOK, COUNTY - Illinois State Police District Chicago troopers responded to a 2-unit motorcycle crash that occurred late Thursday evening, at approximately 11:38 p.m., on I-90 northbound in the area of Canfield. Preliminary investigative details revealed that Thomas Winkelman, 43, of Chicago, the driver of a black 2010 Harley-Davidson motorcycle and Kevin Kniskern, 22, of Mundelein, the driver of a black 2008 Kawasaki motorcycle were both traveling on I-90 northbound at Canfield when the Harley-Davidson motorcycle, for unknown reasons, lost control and tipped over. The Kawasaki motorcycle then struck the Harley-Davidson before crashing. Kniskern was transported to an area hospital where he remains in serious, but stable condition. Winkelman was pronounced dead at the scene. Alcohol was not a factor and it is unknown at this time if speeding was involved. Winkelman was not wearing a helmet and it is unknown at this time if Kniskern was wearing a helmet Illinois State Police are urging the motoring public to use precaution when driving motorcycles, and driving near motorcycles. Motorcycle riders represent 16% of total fatalities and are especially vulnerable since they have limited protection. |
