SPRINGFIELD, IL - The Illinois State Police (ISP) released provisionals figures today showing that 26 people lost their lives in 20 fatal crashes during the Memorial Day holiday travel period. This compares with 22 fatalities in 19 crashes during the 2002 Memorial Day holiday.
Illinois State Police issued 10,524 citations over the four-day period. Speeding was the number one violation during the holiday, with Troopers issuing 5,589 tickets for this offense. ISP handled 414 crashes and removed 167 impaired drivers from the roadway, as well as writing 440 other alcohol related tickets. Troopers helped 1,719 stranded motorists, issued 1,867 seat belt citations and 216 Child Restraint tickets.
